Instagram Analytics for beginners — learn to read Insights in 2026
Complete beginner's guide to Instagram Insights. Which numbers matter, what a normal engagement rate is for Swedish accounts, and how to interpret the data.
Instagram Insights is the free analytics tool that comes with Business or Creator accounts. But most Swedish users don't know what the numbers mean or which ones actually matter. Here is the complete beginner's guide.
Prerequisite: convert to Creator or Business
Insights is only available for Creator or Business accounts. The conversion takes 30 seconds:
Instagram app > Settings > Account > Switch to Creator/Business.
There is no difference in Insights functionality between the two. A Creator account is more flexible for personal brands; a Business account is recommended for companies.
The six numbers that actually matter
Ignore 80% of what Instagram shows you. Focus on these:
1. Reach
Definition: The number of unique accounts that saw your post.
Why it matters: The most important metric for the algorithm's distribution. Different from "Impressions" (total number of views including repeats).
Swedish benchmarks 2026:
- Account with 1,000 followers: 500-3,000 reach per post (50-300% of follower count)
- Account with 5,000 followers: 1,500-10,000 reach
- Account with 10,000 followers: 3,000-20,000 reach
- Account with 50,000 followers: 10,000-50,000 reach
Signal: Reach rate (reach / followers) should be 50%+ on a healthy account. Below 20% = something is signaling the algorithm to deprioritize you.
2. Engagement rate (ER)
Definition: (likes + comments + saves + shares) / reach × 100
Why it matters: The algorithm's direct "is this good content?" measurement. Sponsors count ER as the primary metric.
Swedish benchmarks 2026:
- 1,000-5,000 followers: 4-6% ER is good
- 5,000-20,000: 3-5%
- 20,000-100,000: 2-4%
- 100,000+: 1.5-3%
It drops with account size — this is normal. Compare your ER against accounts of the same size, not larger accounts.
Signal: Below 1.5% = consider rethinking your content strategy.
3. Saves
Definition: The number of accounts that saved your post for later.
Why it matters: The strongest algorithm signal in 2026. Saves are weighted ~10x heavier than likes in the algorithm's distribution.
Swedish benchmarks:
- Carousels: 2-8% save rate (of reach)
- Reels: 1-4%
- Static posts: 1-3%
- Stories: 0.5-2%
Signal: If your posts get the most saves = double down on that type of content. The algorithm rewards it the most.
4. Shares
Definition: The number of accounts that sent your post to others via DM or shared it to Stories.
Why it matters: The second-strongest viral signal after saves. Indicates content viewers consider worth showing to others.
Swedish benchmarks: A 0.5-2% share rate is good. Above 3% = potential viral candidate.
5. Profile visits
Definition: The number of accounts that clicked through to your profile after seeing a post.
Why it matters: Conversion from post exposure to deeper interest. A strong signal that your content drives follow intent.
Swedish benchmarks: 2-5% of reach is good. Below 1% = your content attracts but follower conversion is weak (maybe a bio problem?).
6. Website clicks / bio link clicks
Definition: The number of clicks on the link in your bio or Story Link Stickers.
Why it matters: The actual conversion metric for businesses. All other metrics are "brand awareness"; clicks are "showing purchase intent".
Swedish benchmarks: 0.5-2% of reach is good. Every click is a potential customer.
The time window to track
Insights shows different time windows (7 days, 14 days, 30 days). Recommended:
Weekly: Check the 7-day window every Monday. What worked last week? What underperformed?
Monthly: A 30-day overview for trends. Is reach growing? Is engagement rate increasing?
Per post: Review each post ~48-72h after publishing, when the data is stable.
The Audience tab — know your audience
Top locations: Do you see most of your reach coming from Sweden or other countries? Swedish accounts should have a 70%+ Swedish audience. If it's much lower = your hashtag strategy or followers are not the right geo.
Age range: Does your audience match your target group? Selling to 25-35 but the data shows 55-65 = your positioning is off.
Gender distribution: Does it match what you expect?
Most active times: When is your specific audience most active? Post at those hours for maximum reach.
Comparison over time
The key question in Insights: "Am I better than 3 months ago?"
Compare:
- Reach per post today vs 3 months ago
- Engagement rate today vs 3 months ago
- Follower growth over the last 30 days vs the previous 30 days
If all three are rising: your strategy is working, keep going.
If they're stagnating or dropping: adjust your content mix, posting frequency, or hashtag strategy.
What does NOT matter in Insights
Numbers that get attention but aren't decisive:
1. Total follower count. Reach per post is more important. 10,000 engaged followers beat 100,000 bot followers.
2. Story views. Good to know but rarely changes strategy. Focus on post engagement instead.
3. Impressions. Reach > Impressions, since Impressions include the same person multiple times.
Free third-party alternatives
If you want more than Instagram's built-in tools:
1. Later Free plan. Solid Insights + post scheduling. 10 posts/month free.
2. Hootsuite Free. Less granular but aggregates multiple platforms.
3. Iconosquare Free trial. A 14-day deep dive if you want to validate whether premium is worth it.
For most Swedish creators, Instagram's own Insights is enough. Premium tools are overkill under 10k followers.
What Insights doesn't show
Important limitations:
1. Follower retention. You see new followers but Instagram hides lost ones. Solution: manually track your count over time in Google Sheets.
2. Specific user analytics. You can't see "Kalle saw your post 5 times". Aggregated data only.
3. Bot vs real followers. Insights doesn't distinguish. Must be evaluated manually (see our guide on real vs bot followers).
4. Historical data older than 2 years. It gets archived away.
Action plan based on Insights
Weekly (Monday morning):
- Check last week's top 3 posts. What do they have in common?
- Check the bottom 3 posts. What was missing?
- Write down lessons for the coming week's posts
Monthly:
- Compare the month's results against the previous 30 days
- Adjust your content mix (if Reels underperform: more carousels)
- Try a new hashtag strategy if reach is dropping
Summary
Instagram Insights is a powerful free tool that 90% of users only use 20% of. Focus on the 6 key metrics: reach, engagement rate, saves, shares, profile visits, website clicks. Compare over time, not against other accounts.
Analyze weekly. Adjust monthly. After 90 days of data-driven decision-making, your Instagram performance will be significantly better than before.
